Ages Five To Seven

Overview

Explore patterns in nature. Learn how numbers can be applied in the real world. Engage in informative and interesting literature. Enjoy watching your child plan interesting projects like a "Sensible Party" where everyone who attends has to use all of their senses.

In the Moving Beyond the Page Age 5-7 curriculum, your child will explore all subject areas and will be given ample opportunity to practice letter recognition - along with reading and writing according to your child's ability. The curriculum does not assume that your child can read, but readers and non-readers alike will be challenged. The curriculum is filled with quality literature to enjoy with your child. Oftentimes, homeschoolers are only taught reading, writing, and math during the early years, but a truly comprehensive curriculum will expose them to science and social studies as well. These subjects can be the most engaging and exciting for a young child.

Beyond Standards

All lessons are based on state and national standards, so you know that your child is gaining the valuable skills he will need in each content area. But we go far beyond the standards, which are a minimal requirement for what your child should be learning. We don’t just want to teach your child what she needs to know to progress to the next grade level. We want her to love learning and to become a life- long learner.

Prerequisites

  • Knows letters and their sounds
  • Recognizes and understands numbers 1-10

    What Else Do I Need?

While we do have many phonics and whole language experiences built into each unit, our curriculum does not teach the mechanics of reading. Many gifted 5-7 year old children know how to read and there are many varying theories on how to best teach a child how to read. For these reasons we have chosen not to “teach” your child to read in our curriculum, allowing you to decide on a reading program that fits your philosophy and your child’s learning style if your child is not already reading.

Moving Beyond the Page encourages character development - kindness, honesty, and respect for authority. Even though we are not a religious curriculum, it would be easy to supplement each unit with religious stories and lessons. For example, when studying environments with your child you can discuss how God created the animals, their habitats, and your child.
