Christian curriculum
This will be my first year homeschooling my son who will start kindergarten. I am very impressed by the philosophy and style of MBTP, but as a Christian, I am wondering if there may be any concepts that I wouldn't agree with- specifically regarding the science portion. Are there any other Christian (or non-Christian) homeschooling moms out there who have used this curriculum and have any input??

Hi Kim.
Thanks for your question. It is a very common question, and I am happy to answer it for you.
Moving Beyond the Page is not a religious curriculum. There is no doctrine or scripture taught in our curriculum. With that said, I want to assure you that a vast majority of Christians should not have a problem with our approach to science. We believe that it is the parent's right and responsibility to teach their own beliefs in areas of origins and age of the earth. We have worked hard to develop a curriculum that can be used by parents with very different beliefs regarding origins and the age of the earth. To date, we have never received a complaint from either perspective that we are slanted too much in one direction or the other.
With Moving Beyond the Page, you will decide how and when your children will be taught about origins.
I should mention that we are a literature-based curriculum that incorporates many books into our daily lessons. There are a handful of books that we use that may refer to evolution on a page or refer to the age of the earth. We don't draw attention to these in the curriculum and you are welcome to discuss it or ignore it as it suits your family.
If you have any follow-up questions, or specific issues that you would like me to address, please let me know.
Regards,
Keith

I used concepts 1 and 3 of the 7-9 year old set. I did not feel the curric. promoted any particular religious viewpoint. We enjoyed the concepts used and I found it easy to incorporate our faith and views in discussing various topics covered.
Best of luck
Mama to 5 blessings.

I would suggest that if you are looking for a christian curriculum to look into the My Father's World curriculum. God bless you and yours.

We've just started using MBTP but we like it better than My Father's World because the lessons are more engaging and more accurate for our kid's desire to learn. We approach our Bible Studies separately and I prefer that. In regards to the resources we have one of the titles that does refer to evolution on a page. That is NOT referenced in the MBTP curriculum. I've explained to my kids that some scientists believe God didn't create the World. They instantly respond "But He DID!".

Would you mind telling me which book that was? I like MBTP so far but I want to be ready for that.
Thank You!

Sure! on page 7 of the teacher manual for Ages 5-7 Concept 1: Environment under "Supplemental Literature and Web Sites" The Usborne Linked First Encyclopedia of Animals by David Burrie is listed. I will double check my copy tomorrow to verify the page in question. My experience with the Usborne Internet Encyclopedias is they all start with reference to Evolution and the Big Bang theory. If there is another book in question that is a required literature title I have not come across it. We are using 5-7 Concept 1 right now and are starting 8-9 Concept 1 on Monday.
